Equipment
Playing hockey requires equipment that fits well and is comfortable. It is not critical to buy expensive, new gear each year. Saint David's Hockey holds an equipment swap each October where parents can find used hockey equipment that has been donated to the program. Information about the swap is available from Margaret Carter at
Required Equipment For Kindergartners:
Helmet with cage (plexiglas can fog up in certain weather conditions)
Gloves (preferably hockey gloves)
Warm/waterproof pants, ski pants will work, hockey pants optional.
Elbow pads (optional)
Shin guards
Water Bottle with straw long enough to fit through cage.
Hockey skates (see note below regarding fitting and sharpening)
- Shin guards
- Hocks with cup OR hockey socks and hockey jock shorts with cup
- Hockey pants with suspenders
- Shoulder pads
- Elbow guards
- Jersey
- Neck guard
- Hockey skates
- Helmet with cage and mouth guard
- Gloves
- Stick
- Water bottle with straw long enough to fit through cage
Long underwear should be worn as needed; it is always best to wear a shirt under hockey equipment.
Suspenders are essential in keeping hockey pants in place on young boys.
Cage style face masks are preferable, Plexiglas fogs up in certain weather conditions.
Hockey bag with wheels (a 30 inch bag is sufficient, a 36 inch bag works, and anything bigger, you will regret).
Do not wrap laces around the back of skates, they will loosen up as they play. Waxed laces are preferable (but not essential) as they stay in place better than cotton or nylon.
A helmet and face mask often come separately and need to be separately fitted. It is difficult to screw them together, make the store do it for you.
